Description
This copper Centennial token (Pa-Ph 853A) was issued by Wm. Burwell & Bro., a general merchant of Philadelphia. William Burwell and Brother, Philadelphia merchants appearing under multiple names reflecting partnership changes. & Bro. vs & Co. may indicate transition from family to corporate. Copper tokens were a popular mid-range choice for Centennial souvenirs, offering durability and an attractive reddish tone that distinguished them from the more common white metal issues. The Lingg firm's North 8th Street workshop handled orders from dozens of Philadelphia merchants, cutting individual obverse dies while reusing standard reverse designs.
