Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Lingg & Bro. produced this copper self-promotional token (Pa-Ph 232A) to showcase their token manufacturing capabilities at the 1876 Centennial Exposition. Operating from their Philadelphia shop at 36 North 8th Street, the firm produced the largest body of Centennial merchant advertising tokens, cutting dies for nearly every participating merchant. This piece is one of their own advertising series (Pa-Ph 220-245), distinct from the merchant tokens they produced on commission. Copper was a favored composition for merchants willing to invest more than the minimum white metal cost, producing tokens with a warmer color and greater durability. Over 40 distinct Lingg dies make this the most prolific single-manufacturer Centennial token series. Businesses along the routes between downtown Philadelphia and Fairmount Park saw extraordinary traffic during the Centennial months, as millions of visitors passed through on their way to the Exposition.
Rarity Notes
