Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
A copper mule token (Pa-Ph 225), this piece was created by pairing the Exposition building obverse die depicting the Main Exhibition Building at the Centennial grounds in Fairmount Park and the Centennial commemorative die with Independence Hall facade. The Lingg firm created mule combinations by pairing obverse and reverse dies from different merchant or commemorative series, producing distinctive cross-die varieties. Mule combinations were produced in limited quantities, making them sought after by advanced Centennial token collectors. The copper composition provides a distinctive warm reddish color that develops an attractive brown patina over time. Copper Centennial tokens survive in moderate quantities. The Rulau catalog assigns each Centennial token a geographic prefix and number — Pa-Ph for Philadelphia issues, NY-NY for New York — with separate entries for each metal variant of a given die.
Rarity Notes
As a die mule, Pa-Ph 225 in copper is inherently scarcer than standard single-issuer tokens. These cross-die combinations were created as collector novelties by Lingg & Bro.
