Description
The 1876 medal GW-899 in bronzed copper features the second obverse die with a "Trenton PA" reverse, commemorating a Pennsylvania lodge or organization named after the Battle of Trenton. Washington's famous crossing of the Delaware River and surprise attack on the Hessian garrison at Trenton on December 26, 1776 was one of the most celebrated events of the Revolution. The "bronzed" copper indicates a chemical or heat treatment applied to the copper planchet to produce a uniform dark brown surface. This finishing technique was standard for presentation-quality medals and distinguishes the piece from untreated copper. The Trenton reference connects this medal to one of Washington's greatest military triumphs. The Battle of Trenton reversed the momentum of the war after a series of devastating American defeats and restored public confidence in the Continental Army.
