Description

Struck in bronze, this die mule (Pa-Ph 230) pairs the Centennial commemorative die featuring George Washington portrait bust with the die 262F. The Lingg firm created mule combinations by pairing obverse and reverse dies from different merchant or commemorative series, producing distinctive cross-die varieties. Mule tokens are generally scarcer than the standard merchant tokens from which their dies originated. Bronze tokens combined durability with an attractive golden-brown patina that developed over time, making them a popular mid-range choice for Centennial souvenirs. The Lingg brothers' workshop served as a full-service token manufacturer, where merchants could select from white metal, copper, brass, or bronze compositions for their customized advertising pieces. Under the Rulau numbering system, Centennial tokens are organized by state and city prefix, allowing collectors to systematically catalog the hundreds of known merchant issues and their metal variants.

Rarity Notes

Pa-Ph 230 in bronze is a scarce die mule. Mule combinations were produced in smaller quantities than standard merchant tokens, making them prized by advanced Centennial token collectors.
