Description

A bronze mule token (Pa-Ph 228), this piece was created by pairing the Centennial commemorative die with patriotic eagle design and 1776-1876 dates and the Centennial commemorative die with Liberty Bell design, the central symbol of the Exposition. Lingg & Bro., the Centennial's principal token manufacturer, created these mule combinations by intentionally pairing dies from different token series. As an intentional cross-die pairing, this mule is inherently scarcer than the standard merchant tokens that used each die individually. Bronze tokens combined durability with an attractive golden-brown patina that developed over time, making them a popular mid-range choice for Centennial souvenirs. Token varieties ranged from inexpensive white metal pieces distributed freely to visitors, through mid-range copper and brass issues, to rare silver presentation pieces for collectors.

Rarity Notes

Pa-Ph 228 in bronze is a scarce die mule. Mule combinations were produced in smaller quantities than standard merchant tokens, making them prized by advanced Centennial token collectors.
