Description

Struck in bronze, this die mule (Pa-Ph 227) pairs the die 227 with the Centennial commemorative die with Independence Hall facade. Lingg & Bro., the Centennial's principal token manufacturer, created these mule combinations by intentionally pairing dies from different token series. Die mules survive in smaller quantities than standard merchant issues, as they were produced deliberately for the collector market rather than for mass distribution. The bronze composition produces a warm golden tone that darkens to an attractive brown patina with age, making surviving specimens visually appealing to collectors. The Centennial drew nearly ten million visitors to Philadelphia between May and November 1876, a figure that transformed the city's economy and created a booming market for portable souvenirs. Merchants who issued Centennial tokens gained a portable advertising medium that visitors would carry home to cities across the nation, extending the token's promotional reach far beyond Philadelphia.

Rarity Notes

This mule variety (Pa-Ph 227) in bronze is uncommon. Die mules represent a specialized collecting area within the broader Centennial token series.
