(1876) Bronze Token Pa-Ph 227, d Mule w/ Pa-Ph 230 Obv
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Struck in bronze, this die mule (Pa-Ph 227) pairs the die 227 with the Centennial commemorative die featuring George Washington portrait bust. Lingg & Bro., the Centennial's principal token manufacturer, created these mule combinations by intentionally pairing dies from different token series. Die mules survive in smaller quantities than standard merchant issues, as they were produced deliberately for the collector market rather than for mass distribution. The bronze composition produces a warm golden tone that darkens to an attractive brown patina with age, making surviving specimens visually appealing to collectors. Spread across 285 acres of Fairmount Park, the Centennial featured 37 participating nations and tens of thousands of exhibits ranging from fine art to industrial machinery to agricultural innovations.
Rarity Notes
This mule variety (Pa-Ph 227) in bronze is uncommon. Die mules represent a specialized collecting area within the broader Centennial token series.
