Coin Details
Description
This bronze Centennial token (NY-NY 720AA) was issued by Frederick's Pharmacy, a pharmacy and apothecary of Philadelphia. Frederick's Pharmacy issued the most extensive single-merchant Centennial token series, with seven die and metal combinations. Seven-variety program is among the largest for any pharmacy in numismatic history. Philadelphia pharmacies served dual roles as dispensaries and general stores. The bronze composition produces a warm golden tone that darkens to an attractive brown patina with age, making surviving specimens visually appealing to collectors. Produced by Lingg & Bro., whose Philadelphia workshop turned out Centennial merchant tokens at an industrious pace throughout 1876. America's first official World's Fair opened in Philadelphia on May 10, 1876, marking the hundredth anniversary of national independence with a showcase of industrial and cultural progress.
