Description

J.W. Ahn's Confectionery issued this brass souvenir token (Pa-Ph 804B) as advertising during the 1876 Centennial. A Philadelphia confectionery that issued a single Centennial advertising token. Single-variety token represents minimum advertising investment. Brass Centennial tokens were typically reserved for preferred customers or sold at a modest premium over white metal pieces, resulting in smaller surviving populations. Created by Lingg & Bro., the firm that emerged as the indispensable manufacturer for Philadelphia merchants wanting token-based advertising during the Centennial. The Lingg establishment combined die-sinking craft with efficient production methods, enabling merchants to receive customized tokens in quantities ranging from hundreds to thousands of pieces. The standard reference for Centennial tokens uses the Rulau catalog, where tokens from different cities receive distinct prefixes (Pa-Ph, NY-NY, etc.) and each die/metal combination gets its own entry.

Rarity Notes

Cataloged as Pa-Ph 804B, this brass variety has moderate availability among Centennial token collectors. Well-struck examples with full details are preferred by specialists.
