Description
This 1872 brass token commemorates Horace Greeley, the legendary newspaper editor and publisher of the New York Tribune who ran for president against Ulysses S. Grant in 1872 on the Liberal Republican and Democratic tickets. The token records Greeley's birth and death dates with the "F. Key-Born & Died" inscription. Greeley lost the election in a landslide and died on November 29, 1872, just weeks after the election, broken by his wife's death, the campaign's failure, and the loss of editorial control of his beloved Tribune. His death at age 61 was one of the most dramatic conclusions to a presidential campaign in American history. Token collecting represents one of the most diverse and accessible areas within American numismatics, with pieces available across a wide price range and covering virtually every aspect of commercial and social life. This brass campaign or memorial token documents one of the most consequential and tragic presidential campaigns of the Reconstruction era.
