1870 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-995a
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Closing the entire 1870 Standard Silver half dollar pattern series, J-995a is a copper-nickel die trial be unique. Copper-nickel alloy had been used for American minor coinage since the introduction of the Flying Eagle cent in 1857, but its application to a half dollar denomination was virtually unheard of in this era. This solitary survivor represents the absolute end of the half dollar pattern sequence in the 1870 Standard Silver program, a fitting conclusion to what numismatic historian Andrew Pollock described as the most prolific single year for pattern production in United States Mint history.
