Description

This 1869 copper token, cataloged as Fuld 692A-14a, was issued for Yankee Robinson, one of the most colorful showmen of nineteenth-century America. Fayette Lodawick "Yankee" Robinson was a circus performer, show operator, and entertainer who toured the Midwest extensively, earning his nickname from his New England accent and Yankee persona. His circus and variety show operations were based primarily in Illinois, as indicated by the state designation. Robinson's tokens represent a fascinating intersection of entertainment history and numismatics, as traveling shows frequently issued tokens for admission, concessions, or as advertising pieces. The Fuld catalog identifies this as die combination 692A obverse with 14a reverse, indicating the copper composition. Robinson later partnered briefly with the Ringling Brothers before his death in 1894.
