Description
This 1869 silvered white metal medal, cataloged as JAB-35, is a composition variant of Bolen's post-Civil War medalet. The silvered finish — white metal with an applied silver wash — created a more lustrous and premium appearance than plain white metal. Silvered white metal was a cost-effective way to produce bright, attractive medals that mimicked the appearance of solid silver. The 1869 date places this in Bolen's post-war production period, when his output continued but at a reduced pace compared to the prolific Civil War years. The silvered finish variant adds another collecting variety to the JAB-35 design, which also exists in standard white metal (PCGS #886877). Silvered surfaces on nineteenth-century medals are often partially or completely worn away, making examples with strong original silvering more desirable.
