Description

This 1866 brass token, cataloged as KK-208, features the shield emblem of the Ku Klux Klan. The KKK was founded in Pulaski, Tennessee in late 1865 or early 1866 by six former Confederate officers as a social fraternal organization, though it rapidly evolved into a violent white supremacist terrorist group targeting newly freed African Americans and their white Republican allies during Reconstruction. This token dates from the very earliest period of the Klan's existence, when it was still transitioning from fraternal club to terrorist organization. The KK catalog reference places this within a specialized reference for Klan-related numismatic items. Tokens and medals associated with the KKK are collected as historical artifacts documenting one of the darkest chapters of American history, particularly the violent resistance to Reconstruction and Black civil rights in the post-Civil War South.

Rarity Notes

Brass, KK-208. Early Reconstruction-era KKK token. Controversial historical artifact. Collected as historical documentation.
