(1864) German-Silver Civil War Store Card F-630BJ-1j, Great Fair NY
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This Civil War token was issued by Great Fair in New York. New York was the nation's commercial capital, with New York City alone producing hundreds of store card varieties from Broadway retailers to waterfront wholesalers. Struck in german-silver, this die combination (Fuld 630BJ-1j) is scarce. Token production was a specialized trade — die sinkers maintained catalogs of stock dies that merchants could pair with custom obverses. Congress banned private token issuance in April 1864, but before that, tokens like this one circulated freely as cent substitutes in Northern commerce. German silver pieces have a silvery-white color that distinguishes them from the more common copper and brass strikings. Surviving specimens are tangible artifacts of the wartime monetary crisis that affected every commercial transaction in the Northern states.
Rarity Notes
German silver (a copper-nickel-zinc alloy) strikings are less common than copper or brass versions and are sought after for their distinctive silvery appearance. With 5 cataloged varieties, Great Fair was a minor token issuer.
