Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Civil War merchant token bearing the name of G. Haines, located in Montgomery, Ohio. The breadth of Ohio's Civil War token production reflects the state's diverse economy, from Cincinnati's river trade to Cleveland's Lake Erie shipping to interior manufacturing towns. This copper-nickel striking (Fuld 562A-2d) is somewhat scarce among the known varieties. Each unique combination of obverse and reverse dies constitutes a separate Fuld catalog number, even when struck in the same metal. Between 1862 and 1864, Northern merchants produced millions of private tokens to compensate for the disappearance of federal coinage. The copper-nickel composition gave these tokens the closest resemblance to federal coinage of any metal variant. George and Melvin Fuld's catalog remains the standard reference for Civil War tokens, with each variety assigned a unique identification number.
Rarity Notes
Copper-nickel strikings are moderately scarce compared to pure copper or brass versions. With 1 cataloged varieties, G. Haines was a limited producer of Civil War tokens.
