Description

Civil War token cataloged as Fuld 131A, featuring obverse die 131 — a portrait of Abraham Lincoln — with a muled die combination (/K-277b Mule Lincoln-4 Line Rev.). Abraham Lincoln obverse dies are among the most valuable in the Civil War token series. Lincoln tokens command significant premiums for their combined political, historical, and numismatic significance. This die combination carries no merchant attribution, placing it in the Location Unknown section of the Fuld catalog. Such tokens circulated alongside merchant-identified store cards. Struck in brass, a copper-zinc alloy that gave the token a golden appearance while maintaining similar size and weight to copper pieces. Dated 1864, the final year of Civil War token production before Congress banned private coinage in April. Over 25 million Civil War tokens were produced before Congress ended private coinage in 1864, making this one of the most extensive series in American numismatics.
