Description

The 1863 Civil War store card token F-PA750-1a (GW-561) in copper was issued by N. & G. Taylor Company of Philadelphia. This is the standard copper version, contrasting with the silvered variant (PCGS #785103). N. & G. Taylor Company was a prominent Philadelphia manufacturer of tin plate and sheet iron. The PA750 Fuld designation identifies this as a Pennsylvania store card from the 750 series (Philadelphia). Copper composition and "1a" suffix indicate the primary metallic variant. Philadelphia was a major center of Civil War token production, home to several die sinkers who produced both patriotic tokens and store cards. The Washington portrait obverse connects this commercial store card to the broader tradition of Washington medallic art. Philadelphia's special relationship with Washington made the first president's image a particularly resonant choice for Philadelphia merchant tokens.
