Description
The 1863 Civil War token F-750V-1a (GW-561) is a silvered piece issued by N. & G. Taylor Company. Unlike patriotic tokens with political messages, store card tokens bore the names of specific merchants who issued them as small change. N. & G. Taylor Company was a tin plate and sheet iron firm in Philadelphia. The silvered surface treatment β a thin coating applied to a base metal planchet β gave this store card an attractive silvery appearance. Silvering was an uncommon finishing treatment for Civil War tokens, making silvered examples scarce regardless of the specific die combination. The Fuld catalog number F-750V designates this as a Philadelphia-area store card, while GW-561 catalogs it among Washington medals. Store card tokens with Washington portraits occupy a unique niche combining commercial advertising with patriotic imagery.
Rarity Notes
