Description
The 1863 Civil War patriotic token F-177/295a (GW-646) in copper pairs the equestrian Washington obverse (die 177) with a "Freedom" reverse (die 295). The Freedom reverse invokes the broader concept of liberty that Washington's generation fought to establish. The juxtaposition of Washington on horseback with the word "Freedom" created a concise visual argument for the Union cause — the founding father who had won American independence now symbolically endorsed the current military effort to preserve that freedom. This was particularly potent in 1863 after the Emancipation Proclamation expanded the war's purpose. Copper is the standard composition. The F-177/295 die combination with the Freedom reverse is one of the more conceptually interesting pairings in the equestrian Washington token group.
Rarity Notes
Fuld 177/295a in copper. Standard composition. Freedom reverse is a notable design type.
