Description
The 1863 Civil War patriotic token F-173/272f (GW-639) in silver is an equestrian Washington design paired with a "Union For Ever" reverse. Silver Civil War tokens are rare across all die combinations, as the precious metal was far too valuable for emergency small change and was being hoarded. Silver strikings were produced exclusively as collector pieces or special presentations. The equestrian Washington obverse (die 173) depicts Washington on horseback, drawing on the tradition of equestrian portraiture as a symbol of military leadership. The "Union For Ever" reverse (die 272) asserts the permanence of the federal union. The "f" Fuld suffix designates silver composition. Silver Civil War tokens are among the most prized pieces in the entire series. The combination of equestrian portrait, patriotic message, and precious metal makes F-173/272f highly desirable.
