(1863) German-Silver Civil War Store Card F-630K-6j, T. Brimelow NY
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Civil War merchant token bearing the name of T. Brimelow in New York. New York was the nation's commercial capital, with New York City alone producing hundreds of store card varieties from Broadway retailers to waterfront wholesalers. Struck in german-silver, this die combination (Fuld 630K-6j) is scarce. Many Civil War tokens share common reverse dies, as die sinkers paired merchant-specific obverses with stock patriotic or advertising reverses. Congress banned private token issuance in April 1864, but before that, tokens like this one circulated freely as cent substitutes in Northern commerce. German silver (a copper-nickel-zinc alloy) strikings are sought after for their distinctive bright appearance. Surviving specimens are tangible artifacts of the wartime monetary crisis that affected every commercial transaction in the Northern states.
Rarity Notes
German silver (a copper-nickel-zinc alloy) strikings are less common than copper or brass versions and are sought after for their distinctive silvery appearance. With 44 cataloged varieties, T. Brimelow was a substantial producer of Civil War tokens.
