(1863) Copper Civil War Store Card F-630AO-3a, Knopps Segars & Tobacco NY
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Civil War store card issued by Knopps Segars & Tobacco of New York. New York was the nation's commercial capital, with New York City alone producing hundreds of store card varieties from Broadway retailers to waterfront wholesalers. The copper composition of this variety (Fuld 630AO-3a) is common for this merchant. Many Civil War tokens share common reverse dies, as die sinkers paired merchant-specific obverses with stock patriotic or advertising reverses. Private tokens entered circulation after the suspension of specie payments in late 1861 drained small change from commerce. Merchants in border states faced particular challenges during the coin shortage, as economic uncertainty and military activity disrupted normal commercial patterns more severely than in the interior. Civil War store cards are collected both as numismatic items and as historical documents of wartime American commerce.
Rarity Notes
Copper strikings are generally the most common metal variant for Civil War store cards, as copper was the standard planchet material mimicking the federal cent. With 7 cataloged varieties, Knopps Segars & Tobacco was a minor token issuer.
