(1863) Civil War Patriotic Token F-207/325a, The Flag of Our Union
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Civil War patriotic token combining Fuld obverse die 207, a design depicting the American flag circled by thirteen stars inscribed "THE FLAG OF OUR UNION," one of the most popular obverse die families, expressing loyalty to the national standard, with reverse die 325 bearing the inscription "THE FEDERAL UNION IT MUST AND SHALL BE PRESERVED". This famous phrase originated as Andrew Jackson's toast during the 1830 Nullification Crisis and was revived as a powerful declaration of Union supremacy. The "Flag of Our Union" obverse dies were among the most popular families, depicting the American flag circled by thirteen stars. The flag served as the preeminent visual symbol of Union loyalty, and these dies were paired with a wide variety of reverse legends. Copper was the standard metal for patriotic tokens, chosen because cent-sized copper pieces could pass as substitute federal cents in everyday commerce. Dated 1863.
