Description

This large 52mm white metal campaign medal from 1862, cataloged as DeWitt GMcC 1864-86, features Major General George B. McClellan. Despite the 1862 date — two years before McClellan's presidential campaign — this medal was cataloged by DeWitt within the 1864 campaign series, suggesting it was produced to promote McClellan as a potential presidential candidate well before the 1864 election. McClellan was commanding general of the Union Army in 1862 before Lincoln removed him after the Battle of Antietam for failing to aggressively pursue Lee's retreating army. His removal made him a martyr to the antiwar Democratic faction that would eventually nominate him for president in 1864. The 52mm diameter makes this a substantial piece suitable for display rather than wearing, and the white metal composition indicates it was produced for a broad audience. McClellan's supporters — known as "Little Mac" devotees — maintained an organized political movement throughout 1862-1864 that produced campaign material promoting him as the Democratic alternative to Lincoln. This large medal is among the most impressive pieces in the McClellan series.
