Description
This silvered brass political token from 1861, cataloged as DeWitt C-1861-13, is the silvered brass variant of the Jefferson Davis type (brass version PCGS #680584). The silvered finish gives this token a more refined appearance than plain brass, suggesting a premium production for collectors or committed partisans. Jefferson Davis tokens from the Civil War era occupy an ambiguous position in American political numismatics — they may represent Southern patriotism, Northern mockery, or commercial opportunism by die-sinkers who recognized that any prominent figure's image would sell tokens regardless of the buyer's political sympathies. The silvered brass composition adds a layer of distinction to an already politically charged artifact. Davis's presidency of the Confederacy lasted from 1861 to 1865, ending with his capture by Union cavalry near Irwinville, Georgia on May 10, 1865. He was imprisoned at Fort Monroe for two years but was never tried for treason, eventually being released on bail. This silvered brass token is one of the few medallic artifacts of the Confederate political experiment available to collectors.
