Description

Civil War sutler token issued by F.P. Perkins, sutler to the 145th New York Volunteer Infantry (Stanton Legion). This 10-cent brass piece functioned as camp scrip, exchangeable for provisions and sundries at the sutler's traveling store. Sutler to the 145th New York Volunteer Infantry, known as the Stanton Legion, organized at Staten Island and mustered September 11, 1862. The regiment was reviewed by President Lincoln upon arriving in Washington. Disbanded December 9, 1863 after only 15 months of active service, making Perkins tokens representative of a narrow issuance window. Organized at Staten Island, mustered September 1862. Reviewed by President Lincoln. Disbanded December 9, 1863 after only 15 months of active service. Manufactured in brass, which accounted for the bulk of sutler token production during the 1860s. Brass tokens from this period frequently survive with readable inscriptions, a testament to the alloy's resistance to wear. Manufactured during the war years when private tokens filled the coinage vacuum in military camps across the Union states.
