Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Civil War patriotic token combining Fuld obverse die 214, a design depicting the American flag circled by thirteen stars inscribed "THE FLAG OF OUR UNION," one of the most popular obverse die families, expressing loyalty to the national standard, with reverse die 416 bearing the inscription "OUR UNION". A personal and possessive declaration of loyalty to the Union. The flag obverse family ranked among the most prolific die groups. The stars-and-stripes design required no words to convey its message of Union loyalty, making it the most universally understood patriotic motif on Civil War tokens. Brass tokens stand out from the copper majority with their warm golden hue. The brass industry centered in Waterbury, Connecticut provided ready access to this alloy for New England token manufacturers. Bearing the date 1861-65. Patriotic tokens circulated freely throughout the Northern states from mid-1862 through 1864. Merchants accepted them alongside genuine federal cents, and many tokens show heavy wear consistent with extended use in commerce.
