Description
This 1860 copper token, cataloged as Miller Pa-353, was produced by Robert Lovett Jr., widely regarded as the finest private die sinker in nineteenth-century America. Lovett's Philadelphia workshop produced tokens, medals, and store cards of exceptional artistic quality, and he is most famous for secretly engraving dies for the Confederate States cent in 1861. The Miller Pa-353 catalog designation identifies this within the Pennsylvania merchant token reference. Robert Lovett's personal tokens — those bearing his own name rather than a commissioning merchant's — are especially prized by collectors as direct expressions of his artistry unconstrained by commercial requirements. His engraving skill was recognized by contemporaries as equal to or surpassing the work of the United States Mint's own engravers, and his tokens represent the highest achievement of American private die sinking.
