1860 Token Miller NY-802 Copper Scovill Manufacturing
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The Scovill Manufacturing Company, founded in 1802 in Waterbury, Connecticut, was the largest brass manufacturer in the United States and one of the most prolific producers of tokens and medals in American numismatic history. The company produced daguerreotype plates (dominating the American market), brass buttons, coin blanks for the U.S. Mint, ammunition components, and tens of thousands of merchant tokens. This New York-attributed piece (Miller NY-802) represents the company's sales office in the city. Scovill struck tokens for merchants throughout the country, making their products central to the study of American merchant store cards. Copper was the workhorse metal of the American token industry, and this piece exemplifies the standard merchant store card format. The copper planchet accepted fine engraving detail and resisted corrosion, helping tokens survive decades of pocket carry. Cataloged as Miller NY-802 in the standard reference for American merchant tokens.
