Description
This 1860 white metal token, cataloged as Miller NY-491A, was produced by George H. Lovett, a member of the Lovett family of die sinkers who were among the most important private engravers in nineteenth-century American numismatics. George H. Lovett and his more famous brother Robert Lovett Jr. produced thousands of tokens, medals, and store cards from their New York workshop. The Miller catalog reference identifies this within the standard system for New York merchant tokens and store cards compiled by Donald Miller. George Lovett's tokens are distinguished by skilled engraving and clean die work that reflected his professional training and artistic talent. The white metal composition was used for presentation or collector strikings, as opposed to the copper versions intended for wider distribution. Lovett family pieces are actively collected as examples of the finest private die work of the era.
