Description

Judd-234 is a silver pattern quarter dollar featuring the regular 1859 Liberty Seated obverse by Christian Gobrecht paired with a new reverse design by Anthony C. Paquet. The obverse displays the standard Liberty Seated figure with thirteen stars and the date 1859. Paquet's reverse features an eagle with shield design similar to his 1858 quarter pattern (J-221) but refined for 1859, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and QUAR. DOL. Below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, J-234 is quite rare, classified as Rarity-7-. This pattern quarter was produced during the same period of intense design experimentation that generated the extensive 1859 half dollar pattern series, though far fewer quarter pattern varieties were created. The coin provides evidence that Paquet continued to develop his eagle reverse design across multiple denominations throughout 1859.

Rarity Notes
