Description

Judd-262 is a copper pattern double eagle from the Paquet reverse series, distinguished by its specific die combination within the J-257 to J-263 sequence. The obverse features the Coronet Liberty Head by Longacre with thirteen stars and the date 1859. The reverse displays Paquet's wreath and denomination design in a configuration that differs subtly from the other varieties in this series. Each of these die combinations represents a step in Paquet's refinement of the double eagle reverse, testing different lettering heights, wreath proportions, and rim configurations. Struck in copper with a reeded edge, J-262 is extremely rare with only a handful of examples known. The entire J-257 through J-263 series is prized by pattern collectors as it documents the complete development arc of one of the most famous -- and controversial -- reverse designs in American gold coinage history.
