Description

Judd-261 is a copper pattern double eagle featuring yet another die combination from Anthony C. Paquet's extensive series of experimental reverse designs for the double eagle denomination. The obverse uses the standard Coronet Liberty Head obverse by Longacre, while the reverse displays a variation of Paquet's wreath and denomination design. Paquet produced multiple reverse dies during 1859 as he worked through the design process, and each Judd number in the J-257 through J-263 series represents a distinct die combination or metal variant. Struck in copper with a reeded edge, J-261 is extremely rare. The systematic exploration of different reverse configurations evident in this series demonstrates the care with which the Mint approached the redesign of America's largest gold coin denomination during the late 1850s.
