Description

Judd-259 is a copper pattern double eagle representing another die combination in Paquet's series of experimental double eagle designs produced in 1859. The obverse features the Coronet Liberty Head by Longacre, while the reverse displays Paquet's wreath design with the denomination. This variety is distinguished from J-257 and J-258 by differences in the die combination, which may include variations in the wreath configuration, lettering placement, or the relationship between the denomination and surrounding design elements. Struck in copper with a reeded edge, J-259 is among the rarest patterns in the 1859 double eagle series. The multiple die combinations used for these copper patterns reflect the iterative design process as Paquet refined his reverse concept, working toward the tall-lettered wreath reverse that would achieve brief fame and rapid notoriety on the 1861 Paquet Reverse double eagle.
