Description

Judd-258 is a copper pattern double eagle featuring the regular Coronet Liberty Head obverse by Longacre but with the date omitted below the bust. Paquet's reverse displays 20 DOLLARS and 1859 within a very heavy oak and laurel wreath, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. The omission of the date from the obverse and its placement on the reverse is a notable design departure that distinguishes this pattern from J-257. This configuration was one of several experimental arrangements Paquet explored for the double eagle denomination. The heavy wreath on the reverse is more boldly rendered than on J-257, indicating continued refinement of the design. Struck in copper with a reeded edge, this is one of the rarest of the 1859 Paquet double eagle patterns. The coin has appeared at Heritage Auctions and is one of the most sought-after patterns in the double eagle series.
