Description
Judd-257 is a copper pattern double eagle featuring the regular Liberty Head (Coronet) obverse by James B. Longacre paired with Anthony C. Paquet's experimental reverse design. The obverse displays the familiar Coronet Liberty facing left with thirteen stars and the date 1859. Paquet's reverse features a wreath of oak and laurel enclosing the denomination TWENTY D. with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. This reverse design was the precursor to the famous Paquet Reverse that would briefly enter production on 1861 double eagles before being recalled due to the rim being too narrow to protect the design during stacking. The 1859 copper die trial represents the earliest stage of Paquet's double eagle reverse development. Struck with a reeded edge, this coin demonstrates the Mint's standard practice of testing new dies in copper before committing to gold. This is one of the most historically significant patterns of the pre-Civil War era.
