Coin Details
Description
Morgan and Orr were manufacturers of coin presses and minting equipment in Philadelphia, producing machinery for the United States Mint. The firm built "Coin Press No. 1" for the Carson City Mint, which struck the facility's first coins in 1870. Their tokens (Miller Pa-367 and Pa-367A) in copper and brass served as advertisements for their metalworking capabilities. Morgan and Orr occupied a critical position in American numismatic infrastructure, supplying the precision equipment that struck the nation's coinage during a period of rapid monetary expansion. The copper composition provided excellent durability for everyday handling. Merchant tokens in copper circulated freely alongside federal cents, and the familiar reddish-brown metal ensured ready acceptance in local commerce. Cataloged as Miller Pa-367 in the standard reference for American merchant tokens. Tokens of this type are collected both as numismatic objects and as historical documents of 19th century American business.
