Description

Judd-166 is a striking of the regular 1854 Arrows at Date half dime dies in argentan, a German silver alloy composed of copper, nickel, and zinc. The obverse features the standard Seated Liberty design with arrows flanking the date 1854, as used on regular-issue half dimes of that year. The reverse displays the standard half dime wreath enclosing the denomination. What makes these pieces immediately distinctive is their unusually thick planchets with rounded plain edges, giving them the appearance of a broadstruck mint error. The silver-gray surfaces typical of argentan are strongly detailed and often exhibit specks of gunmetal toning. About half a dozen examples survive, making J-166 an exceptionally rare pattern coin. This piece demonstrates the Mint's interest in testing base-metal alloys not only for the cent denomination but also for the silver series, anticipating debates about coinage composition that would recur throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. The use of regular production dies in an experimental alloy classifies this as an off-metal trial piece rather than a design pattern.

Rarity Notes
