Description
Judd-152a is a composition variant of the 1853 experimental cent pattern J-152, struck from the same dies but in a different alloy. The obverse carries the 1850-dated ring cent design with "CENT" and rosettes around a central circle, while the reverse shows "ONE CENT" within a laurel wreath. The "a" suffix indicates an alternative composition from the German silver of the base J-152, a different formulation of nickel-copper-zinc alloy or pure copper-nickel. The variation in German silver compositions being tested reflects the Mint's methodical approach: different ratios of nickel, copper, and zinc produced coins with varying color (from bronze-toned to bright silver), hardness, and striking characteristics. Each combination needed to be evaluated for its suitability as a circulating medium. These 1853 cent pattern variants bridge the gap between the ring cent experiments of 1850-1851 and the more refined small cent patterns of 1854-1856 that would lead to the adopted Flying Eagle design.
