Description

Judd-148b is another die trial from the 1852 Seated Liberty dollar restrike program, sharing the Pollock-161 classification and R.7 rarity rating with its companion pieces J-134 and J-148a. Struck in copper with a reeded edge and subsequently silver plated, this piece carries the standard Seated Liberty dollar design on both sides. The multiple die trial designations for the 1852 restrike program (J-134, J-140a, J-148a, and J-148b) reflect the various die states and combinations used during what was evidently a sustained production effort. The original 1852 dollar's tiny mintage of 1,100 pieces made it a prime candidate for Mint Director Snowden's restrike program, which aimed to satisfy collector demand while generating revenue. Each die trial designation represents a slightly different stage or pairing in that process, providing modern numismatists with valuable information about how restrike production was organized at the Philadelphia Mint.
