Description

Judd-148a is a die trial associated with the restrike 1852 Seated Liberty dollar program, cataloged under Pollock-161 with a rarity of R.7. Like the related J-134 die trial, this piece was struck in copper with a reeded edge and silver plated to approximate the appearance of a finished silver dollar. With only 1,100 original 1852 Seated Liberty dollars produced, the date was already a significant rarity by the mid-1850s. Die trials such as J-148a were byproducts of the restrike production process, created either to test die condition before striking in silver or as standalone collectibles for the numismatic market. The J-148a designation identifies a distinct die state or combination from the other copper die trials of this date, though all share the same basic characteristics of a copper core beneath silver plating.
