Description

The thin planchet variant of Judd-145 (Pollock-173, Low R.6) weighs approximately 25 grains and is identified as a restrike, produced later than the heavier originals for sale to the growing community of coin collectors. Like all J-145 specimens, it is struck in gold on an annular planchet with a plain edge, featuring only the date, denomination, country name, and a wreath due to the wide central opening that restricts available design space. The thin planchet restrikes were produced from the late 1850s onward, during the period when Mint employees routinely created collectible pieces from older dies. The lighter weight may reflect the use of whatever gold planchets were conveniently available rather than an attempt to precisely replicate the original specifications. Despite being restrikes, these pieces remain quite rare and highly desirable, as any gold pattern from this experimental annular dollar series attracts strong collector interest.
