Description

Judd-143 (Pollock-171, R.8) is a perforated dollar pattern struck in copper with a plain edge. The obverse shows USA above the central hole with the date 1852 below. The reverse carries the denomination DOLLAR above and an open wreath below. This copper striking shares the basic design of the gold and silver annular dollars in the Judd-136 to Judd-148 series but was produced as an inexpensive die trial or as a collectible piece for the numismatic market. The copper composition provides exceptionally sharp detail and warm tonal qualities that make these patterns visually appealing despite their base-metal composition. Fewer than a half dozen specimens survive, earning the R.8 rarity designation and placing J-143 among the scarcest entries in the annular dollar pattern series.
