Description

Judd-141 (Pollock-169, High R.7) is an annular dollar pattern struck in gold with a reeded edge, making it one of the few obtainable U.S. patterns produced in that metal. The obverse bears the letters USA above and the date 1852 below the central perforation. The reverse displays DOLLAR above with a wreath below. Approximately a dozen examples are estimated to survive, making this the most available of the gold annular dollar patterns. The same basic design was also produced in silver, copper, and nickel, creating a suite of metallic trials that allowed Mint officials and lawmakers to evaluate the concept across different compositions. USPatterns.com notes that some specimens may be restrikes produced around 1859 or later for the collector market, though no reliable method has been established to distinguish originals from these later productions. The gold composition gives J-141 a particular appeal among collectors, as gold patterns are always in strong demand due to their intrinsic value and the visual warmth of the metal. Among the annular dollar series, this is the variety to appear at auction.
