Description

Judd-140a is a die trial related to the restrike 1852 Seated Liberty dollar, cataloged under Pollock-161 with a rarity of R.7. Like the companion piece J-134, it was struck in copper with a reeded edge and silver plated to simulate the appearance of a standard silver dollar. The 1852 Seated Liberty dollar had an original mintage of just 1,100 pieces, making it one of the key rarities in the series. This scarcity drove Mint officials to produce restrikes beginning in the late 1850s, and die trials in copper were created as part of that process. The silver plating on these copper strikings indicates they were intended to closely mimic finished silver restrikes, for presentation or sale to collectors who could not obtain genuine silver specimens. The J-140a designation distinguishes this specific die combination from other copper die trials of the same date.
