Description

Judd-138 (Pollock-165, Low R.7) is an annular dollar pattern struck in silver with a plain edge. The obverse features the abbreviation USA above the central perforation and the date 1852 below. The reverse displays a circle of laurel sprigs around the opening. This silver version is generally considered a restrike produced for the collector market, similar in nature to the gold striking cataloged as Judd-137. The practice of producing restrikes for sale to collectors was widespread at the Philadelphia Mint during the late 1850s, and the annular dollar patterns were among the pieces replicated for this purpose. The silver composition would have made these pieces relatively affordable compared to gold strikings while still offering collectors an example of the innovative ring-dollar concept.
