Description

This brass campaign medal for Henry Clay from the 1844 presidential election is cataloged as DeWitt HC-1844-36. It represents another variety in the extensive series of Clay medals produced for his final and most organized presidential campaign. Clay had spent the years since his 1840 defeat carefully rebuilding his support within the Whig Party, and by 1844 he was the undisputed frontrunner for the nomination. The Whig convention in Baltimore on May 1, 1844 nominated Clay on the first ballot, and the campaign that followed was characterized by elaborate organization and prolific production of medallic campaign material. This brass example is one of dozens of distinct die varieties produced by various die-sinkers across the country, each contributing their own interpretation of Clay's portrait and campaign messaging. The brass alloy provided an attractive golden appearance at low cost, making these medals suitable for mass distribution at rallies and through party organizations. Despite the extensive campaign infrastructure, Clay's narrow loss to Polk in November 1844 marked the end of his presidential ambitions, though he would continue to serve in the Senate and play a crucial role in the Compromise of 1850.
