Description

This 1841 brass token, cataloged as WHH 1840-30, commemorates the inauguration of William Henry Harrison as the ninth President of the United States on March 4, 1841. Despite the 1841 date of the event, the catalog uses the WHH 1840 numbering series as the token designs were prepared during the campaign year. Harrison's inauguration was notable for his lengthy address delivered without a hat or overcoat in cold, wet weather — popularly but inaccurately blamed for the pneumonia that killed him thirty-one days later. Modern historians believe his illness was more caused by contaminated water in the White House. This inaugural token marks one of the most tragic transitions in presidential history, as Harrison's death triggered the first presidential succession crisis and established the precedent for vice-presidential assumption of full presidential powers.

Rarity Notes
